Curmudgeon

Sometimes I think that I am turning into a cranky old lady. Okay, actually I sometimes am a cranky old(ish) lady.

Like when I come home and find these yellow plastic things on both ends of the street where I live and kids playing in the middle of the street.

Don't get me wrong, I like kids, I have kids, I even have grandkids, and I know that kids need to have room to play and run around. Is the middle of the road really the appropriate place?

I find myself saying things like "back when I was a child my mom would have tanned my backside if I had played on the street". Backyards sit empty; front yards sit empty; and kids are playing on the street for goodness sakes. My husband laughs at me when I get like this.

Okay, I am completely with you on this. I see it all the time, families always playing, even setting up lawn chairs and tables, in the front yards. I just don't get that mentality. Someone told me it's the everyday life version of Reality TV, the Look-At-Me and what I'm doing, thinking. Not for me. I'll happily join you in a peaceful backyard for a morning coffee, Linda.

I agree with you. We live on a cul de sac and each of our houses sits on 1/2 acre. Where do the children play??? In the street! Fortunately our driveway and garage do not open up onto the cul de sac, but the other houses do and we have one young, fast driver, a couple of driving teens and several elders who drive on the cul de sac. Seems like a recipe for disaster to me!

I think you have every right to show this concern. I'm baffled by some of the things kids are allowed to do these days. I have to wonder if it's because parents are more lax? Or is it because there's so much more to be concerned about? Surely, past generations have had their own worries, and it's not like we're just now having to protect our kids, to keep them from playing in the street, etc. Right?
